The thing that impressed me most about this family is how hard of a worker Carmen is.  Carmen, although at retirement age, continued to work to do her best and support her family.  We just learned that Carmen and the women she worked with making tortillas walked out on the job.  They were making 15 Quetzales a day (about $1.75) a day for 12 hours of work.  Carmen has lived in the same place for over 50 years.

Although we do not know the story of her absent husband, her son, Jorge and his family live with her.  He tries to find work in the fields near the house when it is available, but it is only seasonal work.  Roselina stays at home to care for their youngest, Anthony Alfonso and the other boys when they are home.

We always have a blast when we visit this family because the boys are fun to play with once they warm up to you.  They have a small tree in their yard and they like to climb up it to avoid us when we are playing tag.

Spiritually, this family needs some support.  While Carmen is a believer in Jesus, it seems like Jorge and Roselina (and subsequently their boys) are not.  With the help of Jon, we try to encourage them and show Christ’s love whenever we visit.  We try to make a point to explain that God is using us to help them in their physical depravity to show them what He can offer them spiritually.

Jorge and Kevin have been attending school and this will be Brandon’s first year.  Now that Carmen is out of work, it will be a strain for these boys to go to school and for the family to be able to eat as well.  For just $100 per child per year, these three boys can get an education that will help them achieve more and they won’t have to wonder if they can find work or not.  It will give them the hope that they won’t be making $2 a day nor will they be subject to seasonal employment.

Please consider making a commitment to support this family for these kids to attend school and maintain healthy lives.  For just $25/month you can cause real change for this family who otherwise have no real sustainable hope.  If you would like to invest in the lives of these children, contact Servants or click here to download and submit a sponsorship form.
